Mobilizing groundwater from the Iullemeden - Taoudéni/Tanezrouft Aquifer System. Is it part of the solution? | Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the countries of the Sahel.

The quantity and quality of the Iullemeden - Taoudéni/Tanezrouft Aquifer System groundwater resources shared by (Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria) are increasingly threatened. The "Integrated and coordinated management of water resources in the Iullemeden - Taoudéni/Tanezrouft and the Niger River Aquifer Systems" GICRESAIT regional project (2010-2016) made it possible to assess the potential of the resource, its vulnerability to climate change and to ensure its monitoring.

The assessment highlighted the importance of the resource with no less than 7 high potential areas as well as its low vulnerability to climate change. It also would provide a solution to contend with the major challenges of mobilizing groundwater in the relevant countries and help them achieve the sustainable development objectives.
