Meeting with H.E. Mr Mahamat A. HANNO, Minister of the Environment, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of Chad

An OSS delegation, represented by Mr. Medard Ouinakonhan and Mr. Aziz Belhamra, made a working visit to the Minister of the Environment, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of Chad and his team, on Thursday, February 22, 2024. The Director General of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries Resources and representatives of the Union of Women for the Fight against Desertification in the Sahel took part in the meeting. After the purpose of the mission was explained, the OSS commitment to this initiative was highlighted, namely the organization of this mission that aims at effectively preparing the project development process. Discussions mainly focused on the progress of the Oasis Chad project document finalization, with the overall objective of reversing the degradation trend in the oases of Borkou, Ennedi West and Wadi-Fira, while strengthening adaptation measures and improving the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate change. It is worth recalling that the project concept note was approved by the Adaptation Fund Executive Board in March 2023.

Discussions put special focus on the donor requirements for this stage of the process, and the main challenges related to financing the technical studies, as well as conducting the consultative process in the shortlisted areas of the project. The Minister called upon all stakeholders involved in the project to work together in order to explore the different possibilities of mobilizing the necessary financing for this phase and establishing a good coordination.

This meeting took place right after the working and planning session organized on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at the General Directorate of Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Resources, with the participation of Mr. Souleymane Adam Adey and Mr. Porgo Hounly, Director General of the Environment and National Designated Authority of the Adaptation Fund, as well as representatives of the Union of Women for the Fight against Desertification in the Sahel.

It is worth noting that a workshop will bring together representatives of the ministries working on this project this week, in order to have them involved in the coming stages of the project development process.
