A photographic retrospective of the OSS's participation in the IUCN World Conservation Congress.

Abu Dhabi, October 9–15, 2025.

By reaffirming its commitment to biodiversity and rallying African stakeholders around the implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the Sahara and Sahel Observatory effectively combined strategic advocacy, partnership building, and proactive leadership to ensure that Africa’s voice resonated on the global stage.

Throughout the event, the OSS played an active role in facilitating several sessions and meetings, sharing concrete experiences that showcased the continent’s progress in biodiversity conservation. These contributions underscored the importance of a collective, coordinated approach to addressing the interconnected ecological and climate challenges facing Africa and the world.

A number of strategic bilateral meetings with institutional, technical, and financial partners opened new pathways for collaboration, particularly in scientific capacity building, resource mobilization, and the promotion of nature-based solutions. Strengthening regional alliances and South–South cooperation, the OSS also formalized a new partnership with CEDARE, laying the groundwork for future synergies in sustainable resource management, climate resilience, and biodiversity enhancement.

This global platform further highlighted the vital role of scientific and technical support centers in assisting African countries. The OSS emphasized the need to strengthen a pan-African network of expertise capable of collecting, analyzing, and leveraging environmental data, advocating for a structured, pragmatic approach to monitoring indicators and integrating biodiversity into public policy frameworks.

Through its engagement, the OSS reaffirmed its determination to support African countries in implementing the GBF, grounded in a strong alliance between science, policy, and collective action, and in its clear ambition to build a future where biodiversity stands at the heart of sustainable development across the continent.
