Fourth national GMES workshop in Libya

Tripoli, August 27, 2025

The fourth national GMES workshop in Libya opened in Tripoli, bringing together nearly sixty participants from across the country. Representatives of the Ministries of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Environment joined academics from the University of Tripoli and the Misurata Agricultural Research Center, alongside civil society organizations such as the “Friends of the Tree” Association, agricultural research institutes, and local community groups. This gathering reflects the workshop’s ambition to create a space for dialogue, learning, and collaboration.

At the heart of the discussions lies a shared commitment to strengthen the use of Earth Observation tools for sustainable water and natural resource management. Training sessions on the platforms and mobile applications developed by the GMES North Africa Consortium give participants practical experience, while encouraging the exchange of ideas and best practices.

One of the workshop’s major outcomes is the adoption of concrete recommendations to form a national roadmap, ensuring that the services and products developed are sustained and integrated into Libyan strategies. It is also an opportunity for partners to reaffirm their commitment to continue working together beyond the project’s official end in October 2025.

Beyond its technical scope, the event also seeks to raise awareness among stakeholders of how these new tools can support local communities, enhance resilience, and give greater visibility to GMES achievements in Libya.
