Management of major risks in the WAP complex: the AdaptWAP project supports the establishment of a Multi-risk Early Warning System to protect local populations, Ougadougou, May 24, 2023

The Sahara and Sahel Observatory organized, on May 24, 2023 in Ouagadougou, an exchange meeting on the development of an effective Multi-Risk Early Warning System (MR-EWS) relating to droughts, floods, wildfires for the W-Arly-Pendjari (WAP) complex in West Africa.

These exchanges brought together participants from Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger as well as technical partners working in the WAP complex area and made it possible for the stakeholders to give their opinions and designate the national management units that could possibly accommodate the EWS.

Prior to the project MR-EWS establishment, the hydrological and meteorological monitoring networks in the WAP complex were assessed and the stakeholders were mapped by the AGRHYMET Regional Center (CRA). A design office was recruited in order to produce the MR-EWS  based on the results of the aforementioned study.
