OSS’s active participation in the Sub-Regional workshop on biodiversity monitoring and ecosystem restoration.

Nairobi, 27–30 January 2026.

The Sahara and Sahel Observatory took part in the sub-regional workshop on biodiversity monitoring and reporting related to Target 2 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to restore 30% of degraded terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems by 2030.

This event, co-organized by FAO, the CBD Secretariat, RCMRD, and CIFOR-ICRAF, brought together African scientific and technical cooperation support centers, representatives of the Parties, and several institutional and scientific partners. Its objective was to strengthen regional capacities in monitoring, data management, and reporting for the implementation of Target 2.

The workshop focused on operationalizing ecosystem restoration monitoring, identifying relevant indicators and data sources, and sharing national and local experiences. It also aimed to support countries in preparing their national reports and to promote harmonized approaches at the regional level to ensure coherent implementation. The group discussions allowed for in-depth reflection on ecosystem degradation assessment, baseline setting, and challenges related to data collection, harmonization, and validation required for reporting. They also helped identify concrete needs for strengthening countries’ capacities.

In parallel with the workshop, field visits were conducted, notably to the Karura Forest site, presented as a model for ecosystem conservation and restoration. These visits allowed technical exchanges to be linked with concrete field management and monitoring practices. Furthermore, a training-of-trainers session was organized for the scientific and technical cooperation support centers to strengthen their ability to sustainably assist countries in monitoring and reporting on Target 2.

Through its participation, OSS actively contributed to the discussions and played a role in facilitating and animating the group sessions. As a Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Center, the Organization reaffirms its commitment to supporting African countries in the effective implementation of Target 2, relying on regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and strengthening technical capacities to advance ecosystem restoration.
