Support the implementation of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative

The project entitled “Support to the implementation of the Great Green Wall for the Sahel and Sahara Initiative” is a regional Pan-African program supported by the African Union and implemented by FAO. It aims at improving the capacity of the African Union Commission and partner African countries and enhancing the coordination and collaboration with the Pan-African Agency of Great Green Wall and concerned sub-regional and regional organizations.

OSS role

OSS was mandated by the FAO, a partner of the African Union in the implementation of the project, to:

  • Contribute to the elaboration of a harmonized regional strategy for the implementation of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative.
  • Develop a knowledge sharing platform dedicated to the implementation of the GGWSSI. A concept note was submitted to the FAO in November 2012.
  • Contribute to the identification and elaboration of trans-boundary projects involving North African countries.

OSS took also part in two workshops dedicated to the discussion on the harmonized strategy for the implementation of the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel Initiative (GGWSSI). The first workshop was held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on 13-15 December, and the second in Banjul, Gambia, on 19-20 April 2012 and during which the harmonized strategy was validated.

OSS organized also a workshop in Tunis on 6-7 November 2012 for the validation of the Partnership and Knowledge Management Platform of the Great Green Wall.
