World Day to Combat Desertification 2014

The slogan chosen by the UNCCD for this year’s edition of World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) is “Land Belongs to the Future - Let’s Climate Proof It”.

This global event, which the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) coordinates, aims to focus the attention of decision makers and the various Sustainable Land Management stakeholders on the opportunities offered by eco-system-based adaptation as an efficient approach to addressing climate change impacts on soil, particularly in drylands.

According to the UN, the livelihoods of about 1.5 billion individuals -- 42% of which live below the poverty line -- depend on soils affected by land degradation and desertification.

Recent studies have focused on highlighting the linkages between land degradation and insecurity. Since its creation in 1992, OSS has made of the Combat against Desertification one of its major strategic priorities. The theme is firmly grounded in the organization’s scientific and technical programs developed in close collaboration with regional institutions and member countries.

These programs focus mainly on the intersection of two pillars, namely “Land” and “Water”, with two cross-cutting axes : “Climate” and “Populations”.

Funded by the SDC (DDC - Suisse) and implemented by OSS in seven West African countries, the REPSAHEL project focuses on strengthening the populations’ resilience to environmental changes, notably those caused by climate-related factors.
